Today, August 8th, we come together to celebrate the Feast of Saint Mary MacKillop, Australia’s first canonised saint and a woman of deep faith, courage, and compassion. This special day is an opportunity to honour her legacy and reflect on the values she lived by — particularly her dedication to the poor, her commitment to education, and her unwavering trust in God.

Born in 1842, Mary MacKillop co-founded the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart and went on to establish schools, orphanages, and other charitable institutions across Australia, particularly in remote and underserved areas. Her guiding principle, “Never see a need without doing something about it,” continues to inspire generations to serve others with love and humility.

This year, as we commemorate her feast day, we are invited to reflect on how we can embody Mary’s example in our own lives — by standing up for what is right, supporting those in need, and placing our trust in God, even when challenges arise.

Today, the Grade 4/5/6 class led the school in a beautiful prayer service reflecting on the life and mission of Mary Mackillop.

Let us give thanks for Saint Mary MacKillop’s enduring influence and pray that we may follow her example of faith in action.

“Do all you can with the means at your disposal and calmly leave the rest to God.” – Saint Mary MacKillop
